Making amends with a loss you never got to greet
My thoughts on Lars and the Real Girl (2007) dir. Craig Gillespie

Absolutely adored Ryan Gosling's performance in here, he can't stop nailing neurodivergent characters huh, although in Lars' case I guess it's something more serious than being neurodivergent. Anyway, Lars! What a beautiful and tragic character. I was initially flabbergasted just like Karin and Gus when Lars first introduced Bianca to them, but it doesn't take long until you start to sympathize with him even further, and even worse during his encounter with Doctor Dagmar that even the touch of a woman hurts him physically, so his relationship with Bianca really emphasizes the safezone he created for himself, in a very weird manner.
And you'd think the townspeople would ridicule or make fun of him but they don't, they were initially concerned but everyone eventually rallied together for the sake of Lars and that's absolutely beautiful to me, a whole community supporting him. It's also sad, the thought of how Lars basically never got to grieve his mother, so when Bianca eventually passes, it's his way of finally grieving it himself and finally being able to move on and interact with someone real, someone who's been waiting for him for a long time, someone who he finally learned to be vulnerable for the first time. Aside from the beautiful plot of the movie, the pacing feels fine. My most favorite scene was definitely when Lars was singing Nat King Cole's L-O-V-E, Gosling has a beautiful singing voice dear god, and I just realized it recently that the key changes during the song were to interpret Bianca is also singing the song, they are in a duet, sobs. All in all a very heartwarming movie!!
